Case boundary: this analysis covers POP MART Thailand and the local partnership with Minor International from 2023 through 2025. It does not allocate POP MART’s global revenue, the performance of LABUBU or any other IP, or the wider group’s overseas growth to Thailand. What the sources establish—and what they do not

Minor International’s 2023 financial statements say a group subsidiary invested THB18 million for a 42% interest in Pop Mart (Thailand) Co., Ltd. POP MART’s 2025 annual report identifies the Thailand company as a seller of pop toys and describes later capital and ownership changes. These filings support the existence and financial structure of the local operating entity.

Store counts, the opening-day record and the expansion plan come from Minor International and Minor Lifestyle, which are parties to the relationship. They are evidence that the partner published those claims, not an independent audit of store economics. The public sources do not disclose store-level revenue, same-store sales, customer cohorts, gross margin, lease cost, stock turns or the split between Thai residents and tourists.

Evidence-supported cooperation sequence

  1. Local entity and investment: Pop Mart Thailand was incorporated in June 2023. Minor International reported investing THB18 million for a 42% interest during 2023, creating a local equity relationship rather than a simple wholesale appointment.
  2. Initial physical entry: POP MART’s 2023 annual report lists Thailand among the markets where it opened a first physical store that year. Minor Lifestyle described CentralWorld as Thailand’s first POP MART flagship, while a later Central Ladprao store focused on the CRYBABY IP. The two formats gave the partnership more than one retail proposition to observe.
  3. Bangkok cluster: in August 2024, MINT said Pop Mart Thailand had six stores in Bangkok and was a significant contributor to the profitability of Minor Hotels’ mixed-use segment. The release does not quantify that contribution or isolate POP MART Thailand’s own profit.
  4. Capital deepening: POP MART’s 2025 annual report says the Thailand entity’s capital increased from THB42 million to THB240 million in March 2025 and then to THB408 million in June. It also says POP MART’s ownership interest rose to 58% while the group retained control through voting rights and the board. The filings do not explain how the parties translated those governance rights into day-to-day retail duties.
  5. Flagship test before wider rollout: on 13 August 2025, MINT reported eight free-standing stores and three pop-up units before opening a new ICONSIAM flagship. MINT said the store set POP MART’s Thailand record for first-day sales and that the next step would be selective expansion into gateway cities outside Bangkok.

How the operating model can be read

The sequence is consistent with a staged channel test: establish a local vehicle, concentrate learning in one metropolitan market, compare store concepts, deepen capital only after operating experience, and treat provincial expansion as a later gate. A flagship can test destination retail and brand theatre; a character-specific store can test whether one IP supports a narrower proposition; pop-up units can test locations with less fixed commitment.

That interpretation is ChinaBrandPath analysis, not a causal claim made by the filings. POP MART’s global IP momentum, mall footfall, tourism, launch events, product scarcity, local exclusives and resale activity could all influence opening-day demand. The public evidence does not show which factor mattered most or whether the ICONSIAM result persisted after launch.

What the reported outcomes can support

The eight-store and three-pop-up count is evidence of channel footprint at a stated date. The opening-day record is an event metric, but MINT published neither the sales amount nor a comparison period. Neither claim proves repeat purchases, store-level profitability or economics outside Bangkok.

POP MART’s 2025 annual report also says Pop Mart Thailand declared aggregate dividends of THB488 million during the year, of which THB204.96 million went to the non-controlling shareholder. That is evidence of a cash distribution by the entity. It is not enough to calculate a partner return: the filing does not isolate the earnings period behind the dividend, store contributions, retained earnings, capital timing or the recipient’s total invested capital.

Pilot evidence to require before expanding

  • Separate opening-day sales from 30-, 60- and 90-day sell-through, repeat purchase and customer-acquisition cost.
  • Measure residents and tourists separately, then compare Bangkok results with the catchment and travel patterns of each proposed gateway city.
  • Track stockouts, launch allocation, replenishment time, slow-moving series, markdowns, defects, returns and suspected counterfeit leakage by IP and format.
  • Model rent, fixtures, staffing, queue and security costs, launch events, ecommerce fulfilment and working capital for flagship, standard-store and pop-up formats.
  • Confirm who owns product compliance, Thai-language claims, blind-box consumer rules, authenticity response, refunds and customer data.
  • Set written advance, revise and stop thresholds before signing provincial leases or accepting inventory for a national rollout.

The transferable lesson is not that viral demand makes store expansion safe. It is that a high-attention brand can still use a bounded local structure, several retail formats and explicit rollout gates to learn before widening fixed commitments. A prospective importer or market operator should reproduce the measurement discipline, not assume that POP MART’s IP strength, launch queues or Thailand opening-day record will transfer to another brand or city.
