The announcement should therefore open a model-level due-diligence review, not close it.

Midea’s official article reports the 10 million cumulative sales figure, attributes a three-year number-one R290 air-conditioner position to Euromonitor, and states that approximately 5.2 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions were avoided. It also describes a Malta training initiative with local partner KENKAR, reporting 240 installations over one year with no safety incidents.
These are company-published claims. Why R290 matters to the channel
R290 is propane used as a refrigerant. It is not a fluorinated greenhouse gas, which can make it relevant as markets restrict higher-global-warming-potential refrigerants. The direction of regulation is commercially important: the EU’s Regulation (EU) 2024/573 establishes product-specific restrictions and phase-down dates for fluorinated gases used in air-conditioning and heat-pump equipment.
That policy direction does not make every R290 product automatically compliant or suitable. Propane is flammable, so the exact equipment design, refrigerant charge, room or installation conditions, transport, storage, technician competence, warnings and local codes all matter. The milestone supports an initial hypothesis that Midea has meaningful R290 product and market experience. It does not prove that a particular model is approved, that installer capacity exists, that territory is available or that the distributor economics work.
Before a commercial launch, require a written model-and-market evidence pack, complete a sample and document review, validate local installation requirements, train a small technician group and run a controlled pilot. Agree success thresholds for installation quality, commissioning time, failure rate, customer support and spare-parts response before expanding inventory.
